Creating and Editing Topos

← Back to Help Topics

Adding or updating topos is a great way of spreading your knowledge of an area by giving others an annotated map. Topos are overlaid in the explorer when you are zoomed in close enough to see them. For more information on viewing topos, click here.

Editing an Existing Topo

  1. Find the topo you want to edit
  2. Click on the edit button next to the topo in the topo list on the explorer
  3. You will be shown the topo in the topo editor

Creating a New Topo

  1. Navigate the explorer to the area you want to add a topo
  2. If a topo for this area already exists, please update that topo rather than create an overlapping one
  3. Click the “Add New Topo” button in the topo list on the right of the explorer
  4. You will be shown the topo editor for the region you had navigated to

Using the Topo Editor

When using the topo editor, the default view is of the satellite image of the area. Depending on the availability of this imagery, you may want to change to the normal satellite view when drawing your maps.

Give your topo a name

Name your topo using the commonly known name of the area – Stanage Plantation, Mother Cap, and Burbage South Boulders are all good names for a topo as they describe the actual location, and are already well known.

Enter the name of your topo in the box on the bottom right of the map.

Adding Polygons

Boulders, Carparks and Trees are all shown as polygons, that is, solid shapes.

To add a Boulder, just click the “+ Boulder” link, then click on the map to add points. Only add important boulders – those that include problems or that serve as landarks when finding your way on the ground. You can optionally name your boulder, which is useful when it has a commonly known name.

To remove points, click on them, and to move a point, click and drag it to a new position.

Once you are happy with your new shape, click “Save Element”, and you will be returned to the topo tools, with your new boulder displayed on the map.

Adding Paths

Paths and edges are shown as single lines in topos.

You can add a path or edge in much the same way as you would add a boulder – select the path tool by clicking “+ Path”, then draw the line on the map by clicking to add points.

Editing Polygons and Lines

If you see a shape that isn’t quite right, make sure you can see the topo tools, then click on it to begin editing. You can now delete the shape, edit, add or remove any of it’s points, and save your modifications.
